How Much Does It Cost to Run AI Agents?
The real costs of running AI agents for your business and personal life. Server costs, API fees, and what you actually pay per month. No hidden surprises.
The number one question I get: "How much does this cost?"
Fair question. Here is the honest answer with real numbers from my own setup.
The Three Costs
Running AI agents involves three costs:
- Server (where the agent lives): $5-15/month
- AI subscription (Claude or GPT): $20/month
- API usage (when the agent calls the AI): $2-30/month depending on usage
That is it. No hidden fees. No enterprise pricing. No "contact sales."
My Actual Monthly Costs
I run 12+ AI agents that handle my business development, social media, health tracking, household management, and financial monitoring. Here is what I pay:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Server (Hetzner VPS) | $10/month |
| Claude API (Anthropic) | ~$25/month |
| Supabase (database) | $0 (free tier) |
| Domain | $1/month |
| Total | ~$36/month |
For $36 per month, I have a system that would require 2-3 employees to replicate manually. Not exaggerating. The lead generation alone would be a part-time hire. The social media posting would be another. The household management would be... well, a very patient spouse.
What Costs What
The server is like renting a small apartment for your agents. They live there, run 24/7, and never sleep. A basic server from Hetzner or DigitalOcean costs $5-10/month. This is fixed, no matter how many agents you run.
The AI subscription gives you access to the AI models (Claude, GPT-4). This is a flat $20/month fee. Most setups need just one subscription.
API usage is the variable cost. Every time your agent asks the AI to write something, analyze data, or make a decision, it costs a fraction of a cent. Simple tasks (bill reminders, data lookups) cost almost nothing. Complex tasks (writing long outreach emails, analyzing health patterns) cost a few cents each.
For a typical personal setup (household management + health tracking), API usage is under $5/month. For a business setup (lead generation + content creation + outreach), it is $15-30/month.
Compared to the Alternatives
| Solution | Monthly Cost | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual assistant (human) | $500-2,000 | Limited hours, vacation, mistakes |
| SaaS tools (5-10 subscriptions) | $200-500 | Each does one thing, none talk to each other |
| AI agents | $30-50 | 24/7, all integrated, unlimited tasks |
The comparison is not even close. And unlike a human assistant, an AI agent does not forget, does not call in sick, and does not need onboarding.
What About Setup Cost?
The setup is where the real investment is. Building an AI agent system requires technical expertise (servers, databases, APIs, code). That is what I charge for.
My setup packages start at $997 for a single feature (like household management or social media posting) and go up depending on how many features you want and how much ongoing support you need.
After setup, you just pay the running costs ($30-50/month). No ongoing fees to me unless you want monthly support.
The Bottom Line
Running AI agents is cheaper than any alternative. The real barrier is not cost. It is the technical knowledge required to set them up. That is the problem I solve.
See the setup packages and pick the features that matter to you.
